It is a whole new product category. About the size of a cell phone weighing just 4.2 ounces. In the centre of the short end of this tiny black box, there's a very bright light-emitting-diode lamp. Inside, there's a miniaturised digital-light-processing (DLP) chip, similar to the ones that drive some HDTV sets. Together, they produce an astonishingly bright, clear, vivid video or still image. It can also run on battery power.

The minimum distance for this projector is eight inches from your "screen"; the maximum is 8.5 feet away, at which point you sit this little gizmo on your airplane tray table and project onto the seat back in front of you. Or you can lie in bed and point it straight up to see a movie playing on the ceiling. The 20,000-hour bulb is not replaceable. It also comes with a special composite cable.

But the Pico's true mission is connecting to fellow micro-gadgets: digital cameras, cell phones and iPhones. The necessary adapter for the iPhone comes with the projector.

BLACKBERRY PEARL FLIP 8220

It might seem slightly perverse for RIM to produce a clamshell Blackberry when almost every other phone maker's attitude seems to be 'been there, done that' while they focus on sliders and candybars. But there is method in the madness.

RIM's intention with the Pearl range has been to broaden the appeal of the Blackberry beyond its corporate beginnings and to make it just as much about all the other things that people buy phones for - style, fun, camera, music player, web access, and email, still the Blackberry's USP.

Adding a clamshell variation into a market that's not exactly awash with them at the moment could well prove a window of opportunity for the brand, especially when it's as stylish and technically sophisticated as this one.

Look-wise, the 8220 has a more sober appearence than its brightly coloured predecessors in the Pearl range -which are "aimed at girls and hairdressers", as one WAG had it. It looks serious with its glossy black front, but not necessarily in a boring business way. Put it this way, James Bond wouldn't blow his cool by ostentatiously displaying one of these in his next movie.

The outer screen measures 27 X 34 mm with a 128 X 160 resolution- the main, interior one is 240 X 320 - and is barely noticeable with the phone in repose. When you receive a call, however, it flicks into life, revealing an analogue clock with date as well as caller, battery, message and signal info. You can also activate it by pressing one of the two programmable 'convenience keys' on each side.

Elsewhere on the 8220's sides are a mini USB charging port, 3.5mm socket for headphones, a Micro SD memory card slot - it will take upto 16GB though no card comes supplied as standard - volume keys and a call mute key.

Back to the front, and above the outer screen there's a 2-megapixel camera with LED flash and a red status light. There's a slight curve to the body near the top, which may help when flipping it open with one hand. But there's a small surprise when you do the screen comes to rest behind the body of the phone. This feels a bit odd both in the hand and next to your face when you're holding it to your ear. It's no big deal - it's just a bit odd.

There's nothing odd about the keypad, though, which is all business sleekness and efficieny. The keys are large and well spaced, making the entry of text messages and email as a pleasurable as it can be without a full QWERTY keyboard.

NOKIA 3600 SLIDE

The Nokia 3600 Slide is a stylish new offering by Nokia. It features a sleek slider design whichs aero-dynamically styled with smooth and rounded edges. It is powered the tried and tested S40 user interface which has been Nokia's favorite for id range phones. The 3600 Slide has a varied mix of features and doesn't lack in any department. It has most of the features anyone would want in a phone and excels in the multimedia department. It is almost surely going to be a bestseller and is intended to replace the better S40 based phones. It does lack out on some features like 3G and Wi-Fi, GPS, etc but the features seem to be fairly justified in this price range.

The Nokia 3600 Slide is a sleek phone which sports a very stylish slider design. At dimensions of just 97.8 x 47.2 x 14.5 mm it is very compact. It weighs only about 97 gms which makes it easy to carry as well. On top of the slider, you get the 2" TFT display and the earpiece. It also has a 5 way Navigation key , two select keys and the standard Call and End keys. Below the slider you get the alpha-numeric keypad.

All of the keys have a very good feel about them. The keypad backlighting is nice and subtle. No complaints with the keypad. On the top of the phone, you find the charger socket, the Power key and the 2.5 mm audio-jack. The left side sports the covered micro USB slot while the right side sports the volume rocker and camera key.

All the buttons and ports blend in superbly with the design and impart a great balanced feel to the phone. The back of the phone sports the 3.15 MP camera and the Dual LED Flash. The phone is mostly made of plastic. The build quality is superb and feels sturdy as with most Nokia Phones. It can easily withstand light bumps and falls. The slider action is smooth and fluid, the whole body has a refined feel. It has one of the best combinations durability in this range.

The 3600 Slide sports a nice little 2" 16 M colour display with a resolution of 240 x 320 px. It offers superb brightness and contrast. Sunlight leibility is awesome, way better than most phones in this range. A bigger display would have most welcome as this is primarily a multimedia phone. It captures images at a max of resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels. It features the standard connectivity features like GPRS, HSCSD, EDGE.

The 3600 Slide offers great signal reception and superb call quality, better than most other Nokia devices which is quite an achivement. There is also some background nosie cancellation which works cool. The loudspeaker volume and vibration strength is also improved.

The Nokia 3600 Slide comes bundled with a standard charger, USB data cable and a set of stereo haedphones. You also get a user manual and a quick start guide in the box. It also ships with a 512 MB micro SD Card.
It is powered by a Li-Ion 860 mAh battery - BL- 4S. it has a rated talktime of about 6 hours and can power the phone for about a day half with moderate usage.

With its three-inch VGA touchscreen, curved slider design, and speedy network access, the Xperia X1 is one of the hottest Windows Mobile smartphone around. Xperia represents Sony Ericsson's first crack at a Windows mobile phone (until now, all of Sony Ericsson's smartphones have been powered by the Symbian OS).

The basic specs: it's a quad-band GSM phone (good for making calls on worldwide GSM networks), and it supports 3.5G for speedy web surfing, video streaming and file uploading. Wi-Fi is on board, as well as a 3.2-Megapixel camera and a GPS (or GPS assisted by cell-tower triangulation). The centerpiece of the X1 is its three-inch WVGA screen that's 800 X 480 pixels, compared to 480 X 320 pixel for the iPhone's 3.5-inch screen.

The touch-sensitive screen features a series of Xpreria "panels" that will give you quick access to web sites, music, events and the like; running underneath will be Windows Mobile 6. Also cool is the "arcslider" design of the X1 which slides open to reveal a full-QWERTY keypad. Mean while, beneath the three-inch screen is a four-way navigational keypad, "Talk" and "End" buttons, a pair of soft keys, and a Wndows button for calling up the Start menu. There's no stylus. Google Releases Android’s Source Code

The first device that uses the open-source Android operating system, High Tech Computer Corporation's (HTC) the Dream is due to be made available to United States consumers.
Search giant Google, who has promised users that the Android smartphone would allow them to run any application they wanted on the gadget, without any interference from the company( which would not ban or reject software submissions like Apple Incorporated does with apps that do not serve their interests), has now released the phone's source code.
The Android Open Source Project website that has been launched consists of a project list, a feature description, guides to the roles people may play in the project and how they could contribute to the platform, along with the actual source-code.
The feature description includes apps such as Web Browser, Email and Media Player, while the Project Roles page informs that virtually any one can use the project's resources and thus help enhance the Android operating system.
Devaloped under the Open Handset Alliance, which is a business alliance between Google, Intel, Motorola, Qualcom, Samsung, LG, T-Mobile, Nvidia and Wind River System seeking to develop open standards for mobile devices, the Android source code has been made public so that developers can freely modify and upgrade it.
Consequently, any programmer can download and run the code that creates a mobile phone and also, the Android software platform can become the basis of any manufacture's gadget, which is expected to lead to rendering the smartphones accessibles to a larger user base.

Nokia definitely has the most interesting concept phones. Nokia 888 Communicator is a striking futuristic concept phone. The phone, uses liquid batteries, speech recognition, flexible touchscreen and touch-sensitive body cover.
You can carry it anywhere, in any form. You can roll it, bend it, put on your clothes like a clip etc. The handset uses a liquid battery, speech recognition, flexible touch screen, touch sensitive body cover which lets it understand and adjust to the enviroment. It has a simple programmable body mechanism so that it changes forms in different situations.

People are calling the new phone "mind blowing", "freaky", " really unbeliveable" and " amazing". It looks like there is a ready market for the phone if Nokia is able to move it from concept to mass-market commercial product, however, don't expect to see the phone in the market soon. These type of phones are unlikely to hit the market in the next 2-3 years.

LG Electronics , a worldwide technology and design leader in mobile communications , announced its LG-KC780, a slim 8 megapixel camera phone with special features that make it ideal for shooting portraits.

The LG-KC780 is a slim slider phone at just 13.9 mm thick, but manages to include a large 2.4-inch widescreen LCD. The phone is designed to ensure that its myriad camera features are convenient and easy to use. A Schneider-Kreuznach certified lens ensures that the LG-KC780's camera takes high quality photos that are sharp and clear.

There are not many details about the LG KC780 now, but it seems genuine as it has already passed through the US FCC website. Among the little specification details we now is the LG KC780 have quad-band GSM support, but unfortunately no 3G. The LG-KC780 will also have Bluetooth and a microSD card slot plus 30fps video recording ( the video resolution is not yet clear). We are really hoping though that this one will look better in reality than what's pictured here. It will be launched in markets most probably from November 2008.

Other functionality includes light sensitivity up to ISO 1600, a built-in image Stabiliser , D1 video recording and motion sensor gaming. It's not short of natty gimmicks either - the Smile Shot mode automatically triggers the shutter when it determines that the subject is smiling, while Beauty Mode allows users to remove any imperfections, ensuring faces appear bright and clear in photos.

Bharti Airtel Launches DTH Service

Bharti Airtel has launched its direct to home satellite TV service , Airtel digital TV , which will be available to customers through 21,000 retail points including Airtel Relationship Centres in 62 cities across India starting October 9 , 2008.
According to the company , Airtel digital TV uses MPEG4 standard with DVB S2 technology, which claims to provide better picture clarity and high quality audio. This latest technology is also claimed to enable delivery of more complex interactive content and is high definition ready. Airtel digital TV also uses 20% larger dish antenna that is claimed to offer better performance during rains. The company claims that the direct to home satellite (DTH) TV service offers universal remote both for set top box and TV; high set top box memory; exculsive content such as World Space Radio ; Interactive applications such as iMatinee , Travel , iShop and Widgets Update.

Nokia 5800, previously known as Tube, gained much attention because it was the first nokia answer to Apple & iPhone - not a rival , but a phone with similar looks and interface. Touchscreen thumb-controlled devices are getting more and more popular this days , and Nokia's first attempt in this market - Nokia 5800 release - promises to be successful one. As was announced earlier, at October 2 Nokia finally presented its first multimedia touchscreen smartphone on Symbian - Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic most interesting side is that it is working on a first Symbian S60 made especially for touchscreen control and big resolutions - S60 5th Edition. It is designed to be controlled either by thumbs or stylus, with ability to choose what you prefer the most (unlike Windows Mobile , S60 5th Edition is fully optimized for thumb usage although , you can take the stylus and work with it with no problems. On Windows Mobile all thumb operating features are just a shell that works above stylus - oriented OS ). Interesting enough, Nokia oriented this smartphone not as a premium class smartphone but as a middle - class music phone.
It comes with 3.2 inched sensor display with 640 x 360 resolution, which is bigger than the iPhone's and is capable of displaying movies or images very crisp and bright, 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics ,autofocus and double LED flashlight , GPS. This one has been designed as a full - blown desktop replacement. Its lid sports a glossy black finish that extends to the area around the LCD panel, giving it an elegant look with sturdy plastic.
It comes loaded , in keeping with its premium status - an Intel C2D T8300 processor (clock speed 2.4 GHz), 4 GB of ram, AND 500gb of storage space. Connectivity wise it offers just about anything and everthing including a Blu-ray record/playback drive.

The keyboard may be a tad small, but it offers a good working experience. The keys offer a good feedback and are quite pleasant to type on. The only downside is that the keys sometimes doesn't allow a register click. This is simply because the keyboard employs a deep-click system, for which the key has to be pounded a little harder than usual. While this is not a big issue, touch typist may sometimes see funny errors.

The LCD PANEL on the AR69GU is a standard TFT-LCD. This was a disappointment, as we were hoping it would have a backlit LED PANEL. The current panel is not bad though . It offers a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1200 and offers excellent color and contrast. The black levels were not as deep as in the Acer 8920, but they were good enough for us to enjoy a full HD without any issues.

Cool looking phones are a dime a dozen these days. But what about a phone that can stream live television , complete with a TiVo-esque programme guide? The LG VU is a smart phone with AT&T's Mobile TV service built in. The entire front of the phone is touch-sensitive and a single charge provides upto three hours of talktime , or 10 days in standby mode. The mobile TV feature turns the picture sideways and offers a seletion of channels. The video quality is fairly good - better than the average YouTube video. Selection depends on your coverage area. It supports Bluetooth wireless networking and can stream digital.
